President Rodrigo Duterte wants to improve the basic facilities for soldiers stationed in the Kalayaan group of islands.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana says, the Commander in Chief has instructed him to build more barracks and ensure the supply of electricity and water in these areas.
Lorenzana notes, nine islands in the Spratly archipelago are manned by members of the Philippine Marines.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Spokesman Brigadier General Restituto Padilla says, aside from facilities for government troops, they also have accommodations for Filipino fishermen.
Kalayaan is a fifth class municipality in Palawan situated within the South China Sea.
