The narrative begins when Jim Jefferton, the main character, returns to Kingston in order to pay a visit to the man who was known as the ill-famed pirate Captain Morgan in previous years.
After Captain Morgan had sailed to London to lay a treasure of gold bullion in front of the feet of Her Majesty the Queen of England, he had been pardoned, was knighted and appointed Governor of the British Protectorate of Jamaica.
Sir Henry Morgan is in the possession of cannons, which out-range the guns of the British Navy by far. It is Jim Jefferton’s intention to purchase these cannons to reinforce the firepower of his ship, the S.S. Black Witch.
With a letter of recommendation from Sir Henry for the manufacturer of these cannons, Jim sails to New Orleans. Here he has a love affair with Janette, the manufacturer’s wife, which ends tragically.
Jim sets course to the Far East. In India he takes a cargo of opium on board and changes the name of his ship to S.S. Flying Dragon.
In Hong Kong he becomes involved in the Opium War and a skirmish against pirates off Aberdeen. Later he participates in sanctions against China at the port of Shanghai. He fights a battle against the force of nature in a typhoon off the coast of Formosa in which his ship suffers damages.
Jim limps into the port of Kotakunabalu of the Sultanate of Brueni on Borneo to carry out repairs. Here he makes the acquaintance of the Sultan and his beautiful daughter, Princess Tamara.
He is fighting against the king of the pirates, Tsi Chun Lai and his fleet of war junks in the South China Sea, and is finally whipping them out at their base on Pratas Reef.
Jim has fallen in love with Tamara. The Sultan appoints him Tunku (Prince) of Brueni to enable him to marry the Princess Tamara.
He sails his ship to London. There he learns that Sir Henry Morgan has been found guilty of piracy, has received the death penalty and is now arrested in the tower of London awaiting his execution. In a dramatic action Jim arranges for his escape.
He travels to Jefferton Castle to claim his heritage and to take revenge on his brother Geoffrey who had cheated him out of it years ago, by fraudulence.
Jim returns to Brueni in order to lead the country out of a stage of anarchy.
