Dr. Celia Lamkin, a frequent Guam visitor, primarily a resident of Saipan and Filipino by heart, continues to care for her native Philippines thorough outreach activities in an area few Filipinos dare to venture on to.
The retired physician, and members and supporters of a group she co-founded to raise awareness about the Philippines’ claims to disputed islands in the West Philippine Sea, recently planted a Philippine flag on Dec. 9, 2017, on a shoal the Philippines owns, but which China claims.
Filipino fishermen accompanied them to plant the flag.
Lamkin’s group, the National Youth Movement for the West Philippine Sea, went to the remote Philippine village of Masinloc, Zambales, not just to send a message to China, but also to help bring holiday cheer to the small fishing community in the area whose residents have limited access to medical care and food.
Lamkin’s group provided medical care and supplies to the Scarborough Shoal fishermen and their families on Dec. 9, 2017.
The group also brought “noche buena” or Christmas Eve dinner, for the fishermen’s families.
“I salute, commend and thank all our (National Youth Movement for the West Philippine Sea) officers, members, volunteers, and sponsors for your tireless efforts, time, contributions, services and utmost support and collaboration,” Lamkin said.
“And despite the distance, I was able to organize and coordinate the said medical mission and gift giving through the teamwork and hard work of (National Youth Movement for the West Philippine Sea) family and other collaborators of the NYMWPS Philippine chapters,” Lamkin added.
“NYMWPS will conduct a medical mission next year to our brave and heroic kababayans, (or fellow countrymen) in Pag-asa Island; Malayan Islands, or Spratlys; Palawan and also to the Scarborough fishermen in Pangasinan and Bataan.”
Lamkin thanked numerous Filipinos who contributed to the effort.
